Now Londoners have their own guide book that gives them the answers that they need. This chunky pocket book has maps that cover from Chiswick to Canary Wharf and from Hornsey to Herne Hill, in fact there are over 150 of them. This enables them to concentrate on a particular area such as Holloway, Fulham or Greenwich. Each map has the main streets (yes there is an index at the back) but symbols also indicate where you can find supermarkets, banks, post offices and even some of the better nightspots.
curious places to see, such as a Christmas tree village near Goldhawk road are aso included, but it is not, as the title suggests, something to show you the major sites.
There are even breakdowns of the major football stadia, and some amusing overviews (Ian Dowie does not come out of this well!). Secondary maps cover the major parks, and to be honest for those of us who rarely venture south Wimbledon Common and Richmond are certainly eye openers.
We decided to go and visit some places we had hardly heard of or knew of but had never been. First off was Hammersmith, a buzzing place any time of the week. There are two banks listed, a Lloyds and a HSBC, but although the LLoyds was accurate there was a pub where the HSBC was flagged - it is in fact on the corner of Lyric Square and King Street. Similarly a Sainsbury's was not found, or a Tesco as both were in shopping malls.
We fared a lot better in Shoreditch which is teeming with outlets though sadly Denmark Hill seems devoid of life.
What we really liked were the descriptions in the back in the Shopping section with tips with which map to use. The same applies to entertainment.
In the back is a foldout map with buses on one side and tubes on the other.
This has become well thumbed and is in our office reference section.
