Following a highly successful three and a half year run and over 1,000 performances at the Prince Edward Theatre in London’s West End, Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s award-winning musical MARY POPPINS embarks on a major international tour in 2008.

A fantastic show. I have always been a fan of the film version of Mary Poppins but this stage production is equally as charming, enjoyable and touching. The cast are all top notch, the staging and direction is amazing and the musical numbers are done with such gusto that you could easily watch them again and again. There are plentyof magical effects and also a darker side to the story which adds another dimension.

Certainly one of the top musical productions of the last five years. It has something for everyone, kids in the audience were captivated with the toe-tapping numbers. Just the right amount of humour laced the show and even fans of Julie Andrews won't be disappointed with the excellent Mary Poppins. The backstage crew work seemlessly to give you a flawless production, with quick changes, the dresses have to be at the top of their game and the scenery itself blends so quickly into the next that I kept wondering why I had missed a major change and was now looking at the tops of chimneys instead of the nursery I had been watching a few moments ago. Stunning.

If you don't live in one of the remaining cities where it is to play. treat yourself to a day ticket or theatre weekend and don't miss this beautiful extravaganza.

Newcastle

Newcastle features By Alan Jacobs

Weekend Getaway from Scotland or London ?  - It's well worth the journey many times over.

Newcastle is a revelation, totally unexpected and clearly a city to be reckoned with.  It has shaken off its post-industrial blues to become a clean and vibrant metopolitan destination.

It has everything you could ask for, including fine dining, great shopping and friendly faces on every corner. The general attitude of Newcastle appears to be one of optimism that their town is on its way back to the top.

Over the last few years, millions have been invested making many upgrades and new buildings. Including unrivalled shopping.

All the well-known shops are represented and also there are many specialist shops which you may have been looking for. For example, ballroom dancing shoes. I was recently in Glasgow looking for ballroom dancing shoes and where did they direct me to - Newcastle!  Though I shouldn't be surprised as Newcastle has a selection of diverse shopping to rival London without the pushing and crowds. More pairs of Jimmy-Choos are sold in Newcastle than anywhere else in the country.

The people not only take pride in their city but also in the way they dress. This can clearly be seen with the younger crowd who flock to the 'Bigg Market', (The world renowned pub and nightclub centre of the North East) attracting thousands of young people every Friday and Saturday, to dance and enjoy themselves.

This scene may be too lively for you,  a more upmarket and refined experience can be found all along the Quayside. See our features on Cafe 21 and Malmaison Hotel.

Super entertainment complexes mean that there are numerous multi screen cinemas and so you can catch  the  latest releases, there is also the charming Cinema 'The Tyneside' showing arthouse and retro movies. A choice of casinos for the more adventurous  and restaurants to suit every palatte.

There is genuinely lots of things for all the family and all tastes. You can stay in the middle of town in a beautiful hotlel or just a few miles away there is a wealth of other attractions including Headlam Hall Spa, Bowes Museum. (See seperate features on right menu)
